I recently came across this article to find the correct way to modify my .htaccess file to compress the content of my website.

You can use the free yslow Add-on for Firebug to check page speed, and determine ways to speed up the load time of your web pages. This article details how to 'Compress content'.

While Drupal 7 compresses and minifies Javascript and CSS, you need to modify your .htaccess file to enable compression. Also, your web host needs to support the necessary Apache modules. You can find the .htaccess file in the root of your web directory (it's a hidden file), and if you do not have one or these instructions don't work, contact your hosting service with any questions.

As always, make a copy of your .htaccess file before you modify it, just in case you make a mistake and need to revert back to your old settings.
